Counselor News for October
It is difficult to realize that the current school year is almost ¼ of the year through already! Grades for the 1st quarter will be posted by the end of October. Parents and students— please be aware that you can check student grades on JMC every day. If those grades are low, you still have time to get them back to where they need to be. The second progress report list was made available today. Parents will be notified of student progress in a letter from the school. Please make sure your student makes extra effort to get work turned in and to complete make up work that may be missing. Our teachers are very available to help students understand work before and after school. They give their time during Snack Shack and during lunch to work with students who ask for help.
Many students are currently enrolled in online courses in American Sign Language, Spanish, French and German. While time is available during the day for students to work on these classes, there may be situations where the student needs to do outside work to stay caught up. The online teachers do a great job of making contact with their students. In addition, Ms. Sierra Martin and Mrs. Marty Mason are both contacted if a student needs help to stay with deadlines or needs to reach out for extra help. Please check with your student to ask about their progress.
Students have also had opportunities to do career and college research through area fairs and special event days. Juniors attended the Southwest Iowa College Fair in September. Several students visited the National Manufacturing Day at Pella Corp. in Shenandoah, and juniors and seniors will be attending the CTE day at Southwest Iowa Community College. In addition, area recruiters from the divisions of the armed forces have made contact with students. Plans are currently underway to offer the ASVAB test to interested students.
Finally, senior parents and their students need to file the FAFSA online. This free application for Federal Student Aid can be filed online at https:/studentaid.gov. Be aware of priority deadlines at the colleges of your students’ choice.
